The eye of grace /

After beholding the Lord’s five cosmic acts, the saint turns inward — and confesses. The One whose third eye on the forehead is famed as fire has shown him, instead, the eye of His grace. Faced with a glory that fills heaven and earth and overflows them, the poet admits: “I, a sinner, do not know how to praise You.”

The meaning in plain words

“The One with the eye on His forehead came and showed me the eye of His grace. Having reached Him, I bow to His beautiful feet, which thought cannot reach. You fill the sky, you fill the earth, and you overflow them; you are shining light; O you beyond number, without limit — I, a sinner, do not know how to praise your great glory!”

The third eye on Shiva’s forehead is the eye of fire and wisdom — the eye that burns. Yet what the saint sees in it is karunai, mercy. This is the turning point of the hymn’s first movement: after all the cosmic grandeur, the poet drops to his knees. True seeing ends in humility: the greater the vision, the smaller the seer feels — and that smallness is itself the sweetest praise.

To carry with you / உடன் எடுத்துச் செல்ல

When words fail you — in awe, in gratitude, in sorrow — remember this verse. Not knowing how to praise is also praise.
