Thiruvasagam Explained #7: Sivapuranam – Verse 7

Honey in the heart /

After beholding the Lord’s five cosmic acts, the saint now tastes His sweetness. Like milk blended with jaggery and ghee, the Lord oozes as honey in the minds of His devotees. And here is the wonder: though the celestials sing His praise, He hid Himself from them — yet revealed Himself to a sinner.

The meaning in plain words

“Like milk blended with jaggery and ghee, you ooze as honey in the minds of your devotees — O our great lord who severs the births we are born into! O you of five colors! Though the celestials praise you, you hid yourself, our lord — yet you revealed yourself to me, a sinner!”

Taste is the most intimate of the senses, and the saint reaches for it: God is not only light to be seen but sweetness to be tasted, oozing like honey in the devotee’s mind. The “five colors” are His five faces, turned toward all directions. And the stanza’s sting is in its ending — the gods sang and He hid; the sinner wept and He came. Grace, the saint insists, does not follow merit.

To carry with you / உடன் எடுத்துச் செல்ல

When you feel unworthy of good things, remember: He hid from the praising gods and came to the sinner. Unworthiness is no barrier to Him.
