Thiruvasagam Explained #1: Sivapuranam – Verse 1

A small beginning /

Thiruvasagam (“the sacred utterance”) is a garland of 51 hymns composed by the saint Manikkavacakar, one of the four great Saivite saints of Tamil Nadu, in praise of Lord Shiva. It is part of the Tirumurai, the Tamil Saivite canon.

We begin, as tradition does, with Sivapuranam — the opening hymn, and the most beloved. It starts not with philosophy, but with a cry of joy: Vazhga! — “Hail!”

The meaning in plain words

Manikkavacakar opens with five shouts of joy — five times, “Vaazhga!”

Hail to the holy mantra Namachchivaaya! Hail to the Lord’s feet!

Those feet never leave his heart — not even for the blink of an eye. Hail to the feet of the precious Guru who claimed him at Kokazhi. Hail to the feet of the Lord who becomes the scriptures themselves and draws near to us. He is the One, and also the Many — hail to the feet of God!

In one verse, the saint gathers everything: the mantra, the Lord, the guru, the scriptures, and the beautiful mystery that God is both one and many.

To carry with you / உடன் எடுத்துச் செல்ல

Try saying the first line aloud today — “Namachchivaaya vaazhga!” — and notice how it feels. That is exactly how this thousand-year-old hymn begins: with joy.
