Thiruvasagam Explained (Bonus): Sivapuranam – Opening Lines 6-10

← Previous in sequence: Thiruvasagam Explained #1: Sivapuranam – Verse 1

This is a bonus post restoring the opening lines of the Sivapuranam (traditional lines 6–10) that were skipped in the numbered verse sequence.

Long live the feet! /

After the opening salutation, the hymn continues its cascade of “long live!” — to the guru-jewel who ruled Kokazhi, to the one who became the Agamas and drew near, to the One who is many, the Lord. Each “vazhga” is a garland laid at the feet.

The verse /

How to read it / படிக்கும் முறை

kokazhi aanda gurumani than thaal vaazhga!
aagamam aagininru annippaan thaal vaazhga!

The meaning in plain words

“Long live the feet of the guru-jewel who ruled Kokazhi! Long live the feet of him who became the Agamas and drew near! Long live the feet of the One, the Many, the Lord! Victory to the feet of the king who destroyed impulse and ruled! Victory to the anklets of the crescent-crested one who severs birth!”

Vazhga (long live) and velga (victory) are not wishes — they are recognitions. The saint is not hoping the feet will endure; he is declaring that they do. Kokazhi is Thirupperundurai, where the guru appeared. The “speed” destroyed is the mind’s restless rushing.

To carry with you / உடன் எடுத்துச் செல்ல

Some days the only prayer is “long live.” Say it to the feet, and mean it.
