Thiruvasagam Explained #9: Sivapuranam – Verse 9

Lower than a dog / நாயினும் கடையேன்

The long sentence completes — and turns. After the grim portrait of the body-hut, the saint tells what the Lord did: to one with a beast’s mind, with no goodness, who never melted in love — He came down to earth Himself and showed His ankleted feet. To one lying lower than a dog.

The verse / பாடல்

The meaning in plain words

“…with a beast’s mind, O faultless one — to me the little one, who had no goodness at all, who never became mingled love for you, never melted within — you granted grace: you came upon this earth and showed your long ankleted feet, to me the servant who lay lower than a dog…”

The grammar is everything here: five lines of self-accusation (“beast-minded,” “no goodness,” “never melted”) answered by one divine verb — vantharuli, “he graciously came.” He did not wait for the hut to become a temple; He walked into the hut. “Lower than a dog” (naayin kadaiyaai) became one of the most quoted self-descriptions in Tamil devotion — not self-hatred, but the clearing where grace lands.

To carry with you / உடன் எடுத்துச் செல்ல

He did not wait for you to become worthy. He came to the hut as it was. Whatever your “nine doors” leak today, the feet are already on their way.

நீ தகுதியாவாய் என்று காத்திருக்கவில்லை. குடிசை இருந்தபடியே வந்தான். இன்று உன் “ஒன்பது வாயில்கள்” எதை ஒழுக்கினாலும், திருவடிகள் ஏற்கனவே வழியில் உள்ளன.
